Hi! I have a new concept for this journal. Every week, I'll post what I liked during the week, be it movies, books, pictures, fanfictions, websites, etc... and I'll talk a bit about it...

Let's kick it with Week 1, from Sunday September 28 to Saturday October 4.

Fanfiction

 - 20 faits petits et grands sur Percy Weasley

[French] [Harry Potter] Percy Weasley, PG, 1079 words, by [livejournal.com profile] benebu

(Let's comment in Frech, cause, you know, it's a French fic)

Movies

-
In Bruges
Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes; directed by Martin McDonagh.
A Christmas story. Should one who killed a child be allowed to live? Harry Waters, a London thug, sends Irish hitmen Ken and Ray to Bruges to lie low after a job goes awry in a London church. Ken's the old hand, fascinated by the Medieval, with a fatherly attitude toward Ray, who's young and bored but chastened after the London job. Ray's disposition changes when he meets Chloë, a hip young woman who sells drugs on the local set of a movie featuring Jimmy, an American dwarf. Harry calls with irrevocable instructions. Ken balks, setting up a showdown in the town square. A pregnant innkeeper, dumdum bullets, and a code of conduct play into the resolution.

This movie was a great mix of action, humour, food for thoughts and for the eyes! Bruges seems like a very beautiful city, very historical.
The characters are really human, they make you care for them, even for the "villain", even though they all got a good and a bad side. Thisis set in Christmas time, but this ain't really a Christmas story, only the ambiance is holiday-esque, but it has nothing to do in the story.

- Persépolis
With the voices of Chiarra Mastroianni and Catherin Deneuve; directed by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi.
Based on a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi.
In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life. However, this change proves an equally difficult trial with the young woman finding herself in a different culture loaded with abrasive characters and profound disappointments that deeply trouble her.
Even when she returns home, Marji finds that both she and homeland have changed too much and the young woman and her loving family must decide where she truly belongs.
(Thanks to IMDb for the summary)

This animation movie is beautiful, very artistic, and the story is poignant. It tells a story about a time and a place not every one knows about, introducing us to a new culture, and what the people think about this culture, all through the eyes of a girl, who grows up in this world, living, in his youth, a revolution and a war.
Some bits are really humourous, some are truly sad, but we love Marjane, we get to know and to understand her and what she's goingthrough. After all, despite of the context she lives in, she's like every other girl, loving, caring, missing.

- The Bank Job
Jason Statham and Saffron Burrows; directed by Roger Donaldson.
     Based on a true story.
In September 1971, thieves tunneled into the vault of a bank in London's Baker Street and looted safe deposit boxes of cash and  jewelry worth over three million pounds. None of it was recovered. Nobody was ever arrested. The robbery made headlines for a few  days and then disappeared - the result of a 'D' Notice, gagging the press. This film reveals what was hidden for the first time. The story  involves murder, corruption and a sex scandal with links to the Royal Family - a story in which the thieves were the most innocent people involved.
(Thanks to IMDb for the summary)

This movie is not like any other bank job movie. Set in the british 1970s, it gives an interesting twist to the story, involving Peace and Love and Black Power movements, as well as sexual scandals with Royal Family and other members of the british aristocracy, it makes it more interesting. Many characters are involved in the story, with many subplots that all leads to the same interests - what has been stolen in the bank job.

- The Bucket List

Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicolson; directed by Rob Reiner.

Corprate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to leave it and do all the things they have ever wanted to do before they die according to their bucket list. In the process, both of them heal each other, become unlikely friends, and ultimately find the joy in life.

(Thanks to IMDb for the summary)

Beautiful images of the world (pyramids, Great Wall of China, etc.), and a very touching story of friendship and dreaming, this movie is stunning. Chemestry between those two actors is intense, and you want to go in the movie and have fun with them :P
